You love your dog to bits, he is part of your family. But can you cope with all of the destruction he is causing to your house? Have your expensive items of furniture now been ruined? Don't worry, here are the best ways to stop your dog chewing furniture. The key is to teach them as early as possible. WHY DOES MY DOG CHEW FURNITURE? Puppies will continue to chew on things up until they are 1 1/2 years old. They are using their mouths to explore, just like humans use their hands. Chewing is a natural canine behaviour. Dogs have no sense of value so they will not realise how expensive your sofa is! Between the age of 14-28 weeks, your puppy will be teething so his gums will be sore. Chewing will help to relieve the pain so he will chew the first thing he can get his little teeth into! You can buy puppy training rings from any good pet retailer and what I found worked really well was a frozen washcloth! Just dampen it slightly and put it in the freezer. The cool sensation will feet great on your his sore gums! If you spot your dog chewing something that they shouldn't, rather than shouting at them, give them something that they are allowed to chew. Reward them when they are chewing something that they are allowed to chew, dogs love to learn! PUPPY-PROOF YOUR HOME! If you are leaving your puppy alone in the house for a while, make sure you limit the opportunities for your dog to chew your things. Crate training your puppy/dog will go along way in helping you to combat the chewing problem. If your dog is not left in a crate, hide away any small items that you do not want your dog to chew when you're out of the house or put them out of his reach. Obviously you can't go moving your sofa or dining table every time you leave the house so when you are trying to stop your dog chewing large items, it's a great idea to use a chewing deterrent. A spray such as a bitter apple spray works well when sprayed on larger items. Your dog will stay away from anything with that sprayed on it!About the Author:
