subject: Structure Of The Human Tooth And Effective Whitening [print this page]

Western Society has a preoccupation with youthfulness and a well groomed, attractive appearance. One of the real growth cosmetics industries has been teeth whitening, previously only really effective if done in a dentists office. Teeth Bleaching procedures can now be effectively performed in the comfort of your own home. To consider how effective whitening for teeth works, it helps to get an idea of the anatomy of human teeth. Our teeth essentially have four parts, enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp, out of which, enamel is the hardest part.s

The whiteness of tooth enamel is at the center of our quest for an impressive smile. The tooth enamel is the barrier for the tooth - it is made of up 96 percent minerals and is the most robust substance in the human body. Despite this, it is quite absorbent, gradually wears down with time and loses it's luster with age. Over the years, our tooth enamel can also become layered with stains from substances present in cigarettes, wine and caffeinated beverages. Not only does it look unattractive cosmetically, but the tooth enamel can't be replaced once it's gone. Teeth whitening or bleaching agents particularly target the enamel. Natural tooth enamel is an off-white to gray color and is slightly transparent, allowing the yellow dentin to be shown in some cases

The dentin is located below the enamel is a much softer material and composite of pores and tubes connecting to the tooths softer interior. It is for all purposes, a connective tissue located between the enamel and cementum and the dental pulp chamber that helps support the crown. Dentin is yellow in appearance, and as you age, your tooth enamel becomes thinner, exposing the dentin you get the yellow color which is cosmetically unacceptable. Exposed dentin is susceptible to decay as the bacteria produce sulfur compounds causing the bad dour people associate with halitosis.

The Cementum is a special substance covering the root of a tooth that is softer than both the enamel and the dentin. Its purposes to serve as a medium by which ligaments can stabilize the tooth. The outer elements of the tooth all have a similar purpose - to protect the pulp, the most sensitive area of the tooth. The pulp is inside the root canal, which contains blood vessels, connective tissue and the nerve. If you leave a cavity for too long, this may cause the dentin and enamel of your tooth to decay and ultimately lead to pulp infection. When there is tooth decay that extends beyond the dentin and into the pulp, then there is generally the need for more serious treatment such as root canal work

Teeth are not only important for eating, but also contribute to our social appearance and status. It is a good idea to have a concept about the teeth and their structure to ensure that the proper oral care is habitually followed. Sometimes this becomes quite important because when a person seeks teeth bleaching they find out that it is an internal problem within the tooth rather than just a question of staining.
