Operating system in netbooks is important. As most netbooks come with Intel Atom 1.6GHz processors and 1GB of DDR2 RAM and they are limited in their performance abilities, they need an operating system than can really work for them without being too demanding, drugging down the entire system. Besides, most netbooks share the same ergonomics that include a 10" screen that natively supports a 1024x600 pixels resolution and a keyboard that is approximately 92% of a full size keyboard. Yet, these specs cannot support really advanced OS or, to put it simply, they cannot offer an exhilarating experience to users as they are not powerful enough. So, what is the best operating system for a netbook and based on what factors? a) Linux Many netbooks come equipped with Linux OS because it is a quite light operating system. It does not require too many system resources and, technically, it runs more smoothly than Windows XP. Particularly for users who are really into responsiveness, Linux and some of its variants such as Ubuntu or Xubuntu are some of the best options in the market. Besides, Linux comes with a great suite of OpenOffice, Firefox, and Transmission programs that can offer a really unique experience. Finally, Linux is for free and that makes it a great option for the low-cost focus of netbooks. On the other hand, there is a possibility that Linux or any of its variants do not run on any netbook properly. Besides, it has been widely noted that netbooks that run with Ubuntu OS have less battery life up to one hour as compared to Windows XP, and this may be an important consideration when choosing an operating system for a netbook. b) Windows Vista Windows Vista is generally a demanding operating system that has already received quite some criticism. Requiring much higher system requirements than Windows XP, Windows Vista on a netbooks hardware is far from stimulating. Vista has made quite a progress in home networking, disk management, battery life management, and security and all these features are very helpful for any computer, including netbooks. On the other hand, though, Vista operating system is almost non-compatible with Intel Atom 1.6GHz processors and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. It is a fact that netbooks become slow and almost underperform with Vista. Maybe, Windows 7 is a good alternative. c) Windows XP Windows XP is, beyond any doubt, the best netbook operating system available. This is because Windows XP is well supported by all software companies except for Apple and the companies that make software for Apple. Besides, XP run successfully all contemporary programs, but also programs that are old enough to be compatible with Vista or Windows 7. Although Windows XP requires more system resources than Linux and its variants, and is not quite secure as the Vista because it lacks User Account Control, it remains a stable operating system. Placing Windows XP in a netbook seems perfectly logical. So, according to experts, Windows XP is the best operating system for a netbook. However, when choosing a netbook you should consider if it matches your style, your profile and your needs. Netbooks come with several operating systems and each OS has its own features. If you want to go for a cheaper, easier to use option, go for a Linux variant; if you are more complex, but looking for higher security and better disk management, go for Windows Vista; finally, if you are looking to settle the past and the future in an operating system that can offer you reliability and efficiency, Windows XP is your choice. At the end of the day, the best operating system for your netbook is your choice.About the Author:
