Death is a mysterious part of life, that is why most people do not like to think about it. Death and dying are rarely ever talked about by humans in a daily basis. Most humans try very hard to ignore their own life's fragility.

Death is somewhat a scary idea for most people. Nonetheless, without undertakers, the task of laying our dearly departed to rest would be a very difficult undertaking indeed. What are the requisites to become an undertaker? The following lists the requisite qualities and characteristics of a good undertaker.

Arrangements and organising services linked to interments and wakes are generally taken care of by funeral directors necessary for the interment of someone who passed away. Mentioned below are a few of the important skills and personal qualities that undertakers must possess to succeed in their job.

As his services may be needed at any time of the day, a funeral director must be open to working at odd hours too. He should be prepared to work away from his workplace as the task requires him to be available at the place where he is required.

The mortician must be able to respect the feelings of clients, listen and understand their needs and communicate lucidly. He must be able to manage and interact with people of different ages and people having various social and ethnic backgrounds. He should be compassionate and should understand others' feelings. But he will need to provide support to the bereaved family and must stay strong and emotionally detached so that he can perform his functions well.

Although the job is by nature serious and distressful, the undertakers must impart an aura of serenity to the proceedings instead of more sorrow or sadness through their attitude.

By nature, those who supervise funeral services should be broad minded. They should be willing to respect the faith and beliefs of all religions and must be learned in this area. They should also be aware of the rituals and customs of burial of different sects.

A funeral service coordinator must have good managerial and organizational skills. Making arrangements for necessary services like flowers, hearse etc will involve coordination with several providers and will require leadership and management skills.

As the mortician will shoulder the responsibility of obtaining all clearances and adhering to all regulations with respect to the ceremony, he will have to be well versed in such procedures and legal formalities. He will have to be fully conscious of procedures to be followed for the purpose of obtaining death certificates or insurance payments.

Lastly, an undertaker should know how to drive and should possess a valid driving license, as he may be required to drive hearses and limousines.
