subject: Help Keep Your Vacuum Cleaner Bag Smelling Nicely [print this page]

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without that wonderful invention - the vacuum cleaner? Without the vacuum cleaner, how would we be able to keep our floors, carpets and rugs clean without a whole lot of extra labor? The vacuum is a wonderful device that quickly removes all that dirt, dust and grim from your carpets and rugs. However, the vacuum cleaner bag, which holds the throw away paper sack, does become quite smelly after awhile.

Those smelly odors can come from a variety of places, such as the outdoors, your beloved pets and just simply the odors that build up over time from all the dust in the air that gets vacuumed up. Luckily, there are some ways that will help you to remove and eliminate most of the stench that settles into the vacuum cleaner bag.

Three common household items that can be used to eliminate those smells include baking soda, cedar chips and even detergent soap.

Cedar Chips

When you place some cedar chips into the vacuum cleaner bag, you will notice some immediate benefits. It's easy to place them inside the vacuum cleaner bag itself or you can simply vacuum them up into the bag by vacuuming them up off the floor.

When you use cedar chips, you will notice that they give off a very pleasurable scent. Cedar chips are also known to be a natural insect repellant so if you store your vacuum in a closet, it will help ward off the pesky moths. You'll notice the scent while vacuuming as well as when it is turned off.

Baking Soda

One item that you can probably find in just about every household is baking soda. Typically, people use baking soda to help get rid of odors in the fridge. But did you know you can also use it to get rid of odors in your carpet as well as your vacuum cleaner bag?

The best way to get the benefit of using baking soda to get rid of odors is to simply sprinkle it on your carpet. You can let the baking soda sit for awhile to get rid of those stubborn odors. Then, you just simply vacuum your carpet. Not only will your carpet be clean and fresh, but the vacuumed up baking soda will deodorize your vacuum cleaner bag, too.

Detergent Soap

One really easy way to get your vacuum cleaner bag back to its odor-free existence is by throwing it into the washer. You can use a couple tablespoons of regular powdered detergent along with a splash of lemon juice. Then you just hang the vacuum cleaner bag outdoors to dry. Don't put the vacuum cleaner bag in the dryer!

You can also just add a bit of laundry detergent to the bag itself. Just add a couple tablespoons of the powdered detergent into the bag to help freshen things up between washings.
