subject: Different Causes of Skin Aging [print this page] As we all know, skin aging is part of the whole aging process of a person. According to studies, there are basically two types of skin aging. The first one is the intrinsic aging, or aging from the inside, and the other one is the extrinsic aging, or aging caused by external factors such as prolonged sun exposure and unhealthy lifestyle.
Intrinsic aging is basically the natural aging process. This is the inevitable type of aging. According to research, this aging process starts around our mid twenties. This is the stage in wherein collagen production of our skin slows down and the rejuvenation of skin cells take more time than usual. Signs of skin aging may not be very visible during our mid twenties, but we will eventually see and feel the changes as years go by. Some of the changes may include wrinkles, laugh lines, crows feet, hollowed cheeks and eyes, and thinning of the skin. Genetics also play a big role in this type of aging.
Extrinsic aging as I have said a while ago, is mainly caused by external factors. This type of aging quickens the premature aging of the skin. It is basically caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. The sun's harmful ultra violet rays are the culprit in skin aging so we must protect our skin from it while we are still young. Aging is inevitable. But we can definitely slow down its process by avoiding the factors that contribute to extrinsic aging such as avoiding unhealthy habits like drinking alcoholic beverages, smoking, lack of sleep and excessive stress.
