subject: At&t Layoffs Downsizing Is Reality [print this page]

I received calls from friends a few days ago concerning another round of layoffs by AT&T. One person called me crying stating they did not understand how they were going to be able to make it. I was laid off by AT&T in January 2009 and even though I had no idea what I was going to do to bring income into the household I was happy about the situation. I told my friend to first of all take a deep breath and understand that it is not personal. It really is not. There just comes a time when corporations need to downsize and relieve themselves of older workers and that time is apparently now in this current economy. To be fair to the company when I was laid off there were older and younger workers affected by the move I'm just not sure if that is still the case.

I mentioned to my friend, had I not been laid off I probably would have stayed there forever and that's why I believe I had a feeling of relief when it happened to me. They pushed me out and made me focus on me and I am grateful for that push.

If you're one of the 12, 15 or 20,000 employees affected by the layoffs in the past year and you're feeling scared about it here are a few tips I can give you to hopefully get you focused on the next chapter of your work life.

Know this: 1. AT&T provides some of the best training in the world to its employees so you are equipped with skills you may not even realize you have and that puts you way ahead of most of those in the job market 2. You need to take a moment and determine what you can do to bring money into the home over the next 90 days even while you are still discovering what your final work role will be. 3. If you qualify for severance that helps a lot if not then you have to move faster. 4. Don't get caught up in the TV hype about the number of people out of work. It is true 15 million Americans are unemployed. You can't do anything about that so focus on you. This is a nation of consumers and there is ALWAYS a way to make legitimate money. 5. Plan what it is you want to do and map in out in 30, 60, 90 day intervals and then look at it in a 6 month - one year time frame. 6. It is extremely important that you plan your attack because it's you against the work force and you must and you can win if you plan and work that plan 7. It may mean that you take the route I have decided to and that's entrepreneurship through article marketing online. I want my future after 30 years, in my hands now.

My advice is to dry your eyes and exhale and know from inside yourself that you can survive this for you and your family. Decide what you want to do and do it one day at a time.
