When you Toyota Prius battery is dying it can be a hard thing to deal with. Toyota says it will be $4,000 or so to fix it, and not a lot of Prius owners see this one coming. But there is some good news for Prius owners what find them self looking for a solution! Let me explain some facts for those of you Prius owners that are just begining your research on this tough issue that you have found yourself in. 2001-2003 Prius' carry a Generation I battery pack. These packs are extremely hard to find, and it would seem almost impossible to replace without paying around $2,000 for them, and that is if you are lucky enough to find a rebuilt one! 2004-2009 Prius' carry a Generation II hybrid battery pack and this makes it easier for you to find a Prius battery replacement. But this still comes at a steep price, you can end up with a used 2004-09 hybrid battery pack, but it can cost you anywhere from about $1,800 to $5,000 depending on where you buy it, how many miles are on the Prius it came out of, and how old the Prius is. So what is the best solution for a Prius owner with a Generation I battery pack? Ok, if you have a Generation I battery that needs to be replaced then you are looking at about $4,000 for Toyota to fix it, $1,800 for a replacement that was rebuilt. (NOT USED, NEVER BUY USED BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAVE AN 8 YEAR LIFESPAN!) I personally rebuild my own hybrid battery packs using newer cells, and it cost about $500 or so. If you are some what mechanical, or you can uses hand tools, this might be one of your options. Using a guide I found on the Internet, I was able to take newer cells from a Generation II Toyota Prius battery, and put them into my Generation I Toyota Prius battery.
