subject: 3 Steps To Choosing Your Wedding Reception Music [print this page]

Silence fills the room and all you can hear are people chatting and chairs screeching across the floor as people take a seat. I'm sure this isn't your ideal background noise that you envision for your wedding reception. Most of us want our guest to be up having a great time with no need to sit, but to only take a break from all the fun their having. Oh, and for the meal of course. Choosing your music can be a little overwhelming when you are thinking about filling hours of time with music that means something to you. There's no need to fret; there are 3 steps that can guide you as you make your music choices.

Step #1: Go Through Your Personal Collection

If you are starting with a blank slate try beginning by going through your own personal music collection. It's nice to have music that you are used to and truly enjoy. If this doesn't provide enough inspiration for choices go through your friends' and families' collections. While on your social networking sites you can ask for comments and ideas. The more minds the better. Do an online search for wedding reception songs.

Step#2: Choose Your Music Appropriately

Be careful just picking music you like off of a list or from anywhere else for that matter. Of course you want to like the music that will be played but try to think if it fits the setting. First imagine the mood and tone that you desire for the event and try to match the music to this envisioned setting. Think beyond the beat and really listen to the lyrics. Are they words that are fitting for a wedding reception? (No body wants to hear songs about cheating when you just had a beautiful wedding.)Your guests play another role. If your goal is for them to have a good time choose music that most will be pleased with.

Step #3: Hire a DJ

When you hire many DJ's they'll often give you a list to go through where you can choose what songs you want and don't want. Hopefully by this point you already have a list that is almost complete. The DJ's part is an integral role so go off of referrals. They are the one's that set the tone for the event and they need to manage their time and be able to stick to the program that is laid out. They need to know at what point the cake will be cut, special dances and other times that you want your guests' undivided attention. If you have a wedding planner they can help to keep the DJ on track, though it's imperative to have a DJ that can self manage. Your DJ should make all your music choices come to life.

Once you follow these 3 steps you will find that before long you will have a list that you are proud of. Start your brainstorming as soon as you know there is going to be wedding. The sooner you start the longer you have to come up with more ideas or make revisions as needed. On your special day enjoy the soundtrack to your new lives together.
