subject: Classic Car News: Alfa Celebrate A Century Of Greatness [print this page]

There are few car marques that can boast such a history of aesthetically exquisite machines as Alfa Romeo, according to IrishTimes.com, as well as having glamorously evocative roll-off-the-tongue names. Giulia, Spider, Giulietta and Alfetta are just a few of the names that put other carmakers to shame.

With such an impressive portfolio of great automobiles its no surprise the number of alfaholics around the world. Around a hundred of these turned up at the Classic Car Live show in Mondello last weekend, having been drawn in by the Alfa legacy, as well as the sunshine.

The NY Times website has reported that it is particularly the enthusiasts, collectors and racing fans who hold the Italian marquee especially close to their hearts. For the fanatics who remember the Duetto that Dusty Hoffman drove in the hit 1967 film The Graduate, or the hard-core enthusiasts who know all about Alfas win in the Millie Miglia in 1938, the mystique lives on.

According to the NY Times website, much of the passion that remains for Alfa stems from its fire breathing, race-dominating cars of the 1930s, referred to as the cars that were the Ferraris of the era.

Alfas havent always been known for their reliability, but this hasnt stopped them having a century of success. Brewster Thackeray, president of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club USA said, Alfas have always been somewhat eccentric, but we put up with the cars being demanding and sometimes temperamental in exchange for the joy they deliver.
