subject: An Introduction to Growing Herbs - What you Need to Know Before you Start! [print this page]

When it comes to growing herbs, they're very forgiving. They tend not to be too fussy when it comes to soil - in fact many herbs come from the Mediterranean region where soils are stony and sparse, so don't worry too much if your soil is less than optimal. They do, however, like full sun so try to find a sunny spot that is sheltered from the wind if you want your herbs to thrive. It's also worth noting which herbs are annuals and which are perennials before you start planting. Perennials such as bay and rosemary need a lot of space, and can be difficult to move once established. Others, such as basil or coriander (cilantro), are frost-tender annuals so don't plant them too early if you live in a temperate climate. It does mean, however, that you don't have to worry too much if you plant them in the wrong spot as you can always choose another next year.
