subject: Alcohol Tests And Society [print this page]

It is widely known that excessive alcohol consumption has negative effects on our body. Not only are we posing risks to our liver, we are also jeopardising our mental judgment, causing us to lose control over our physical actions. As such, most employers and school officials have started to implement random alcohol testing policies. Just like steroids testing, they feel that it is important to identify those who are appear to have problems with alcohol dependence. This will allow those that have problems can receive the kind of help that they need and employers can also maintain safe workplace and school environments where individuals and teams can continue to deliver their best.

It is often perceived that the purpose of alcohol tests is to single out those that have grown dependent on alcohol. But what is often overlooked are the benefits that society can gain from these tests.

One obvious benefit is that the workplace and school environments can be kept safe with the help of alcohol tests. With an effective alcohol testing policy, consumption of alcohol while at work or in school can be discouraged and enforced. This is possible because employees or students realise the ill effects of consuming alcohol. It is therefore important that an alcohol testing policy is explained to every employee or student so they can better understand the effects of their actions.

Another benefit that alcohol testing policies can bring is that they can help CEOs and teachers identify who among their employees or students require support. Dependence on alcohol can have significant negative effects not only to a person's health but also to his or her relationships with other people. It can alter state of mind, causing us to act outside what we normally would because we have lost control over our actions and reactions.

Alcohol tests can prove to bring several benefits to several sectors of our society, especially in the corporate and academic sectors. So before any judgment is passed on alcohol testing and policies surrounding them, let us first review their true purpose and benefits.
