subject: Strength The Basic Skill In Rugby [print this page]

Most rugby players no matter what gender and age are required to have appropriate strength and agility to keep up in the game. The game in itself is mostly spent in physical contact and the strength is tested with the strength of the opponent. This is especially true with rugby than any other forms of football. Other forms of football dont spend a great deal of physical contact than rugby does.

Grappling and wrestling are pretty much the common physical contact involved in rugby. But typically, rugby has a distinct characteristic of spending so much time to oppose loads of weight heavier than ones own in an attempt to win it over and drive the other player forward. This is apparent in the scrum, maul and tackle. Each rugby player must carry on with their positions until the goals are achieved.

The carrier of the ball and the tackler both opposes one another and all these contacts make the rugby game primarily as a collision sport. The only difference is that the tackles in the game are terminated faster and more quickly otherwise it will be violation of the basic rules. Indeed, physical strength is the most important aspect or element involved in this game. You should recognize the importance of physical strength and work on it.

Most youth rugby league players are still in the process of developing their true strength but even then a considerable amount of training is planned in order to hone both the skills and the strength of each player so as not to be overthrown by the opponent. The idea is to stand your ground and never let the opponent get to the ball. The contact mostly is when players try to defend the carrier of the ball.

Even in youth rugby league, selections are based on the weight and strength of the player even when the player plays at the backline position. The heavy weight only applies in rugby but doesnt give advantage in the game of soccer, which is also another form of football for that matter. Now that you know how important physical strength is in the game, you should start developing this requirement.

In order for one to be able to participate even in youth rugby league, one must have the necessary skill, knowledge and strength in order to execute plays well.
