One surprisingly affordable option is personal duress systems. A duress system can keep a school's staff, student body, and local police department on the same page. Properly trained staff members would be able to alert other members on the networkteachers, students, and policeif any incident should occur. Personal safety alarms have become popular in prisons, hospitals, and schools. These easy-to-use systems, in my opinion, seem like one of the most practical lines of defense. During a chaotic event such as a school shooting, it might be difficult to get to an intercom or a phone. And, in those situations, communication is vital. Of course, it isn't up to me to decide, but school security seems as if it could use some padding behind its front walls. A fortress can only stand for so long if the army behind it isn't willing to fight back.
