subject: Can Flagyl Completely Cure Bacterial Vaginosis? - Flagyl Can Cure BV, But You Risk Having Recurrent Bacterial Vaginosis After That! [print this page]

Can Flagyl completely cure Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)? Yes it can, provided that the doctor who prescribed it to you gave you the right dosage, frequency and length of treatment and that you follow these religiously without fail. And no it can't, if you continue to miss doses, have inconsistent spaces between doses, stop taking the drug as soon as symptoms subside, taking not enough dosage and has other pathological conditions that deplete your immune system, you're doing something to continually trigger the recurrence of the disease or simply can't know the reason why.

Antibiotics can cure BV but you risk having recurrent infection if you comply poorly with the treatment regimen. By taking Flagyl (and any antibiotic, for that matter) and abruptly stopping it before the prescribed length of time, makes the bacteria resistant to this drug. So that no matter how much and how long you take it during the next course of treatment, there will be minimal effect, below therapeutic level, to the bacteria because they have already adapted themselves to the drug making it useless.

But let's just say you took the right dose of meds with consistent spaces between each dose. You even adhered to the right length of treatment and thought that your infection was already curedwhich is, in fact, correct. But after a week, you begin itching again, and then you realize that you're going back to where you started. Alas!

According to studies, recurrence of Bacterial Vaginosis is possible even after successfully curing it. More than half of those treated experience recurrent symptoms within 12 months, oftentimes after a month, before or after menses or after sexual intercourse. It is not clear why so many recurrent vaginal infections develop. But many have attributed it to the destruction of probiotics, like acidophilus, along with the bad bacteria by the antibiotics like Flagyl. And when the signs and symptoms attack again, a second course of antibiotics is generally prescribed.

Adding homeopathic remedies may prevent the recurrence of the infection. Abstinence may do you good but if this is too much, perhaps a condom can help prevent aggravate the already imbalanced pH of the vagina. A diet high in vitamins (especially vitamins C and E), minerals and good bacteria (lactobacilli) will help in healing and the balance between the good and bad bacteria. Citrus fruits, sugar and iron supplements are generally avoided. Acidophilus supplements may also be taken. This may greatly help in repopulating the body with the probiotics destroyed during the course of antibiotic treatment.
