subject: What Can You Do About Nose Snoring? [print this page]

If you've done even a little research into snoring you've seen that "snoring" and "nose snoring" are often used interchangeably. Are they different? Are they the same thing? Are treatment options different?

Nose snoring is a form of snoring, and those who use the two terms interchangeably are not correct. This can lead to confusion when it comes to selecting a treatment option. Just ask anyone who has bought a chin strap to keep their mouth closed while they sleep only to find out that it didn't stop their snoring.

Often nose snoring is not a chronic condition. It can be caused by congestion brought on by a cold or allergies, for example. The cure might be as simple as using a nasal spray or antihistamines to clear the congestion, allowing you - and your partner - to get a restful, peaceful night's sleep.

If your snoring isn't a temporary condition, you will have to determine the cause before you can select a remedy. You may have a nasal deformity, such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps. It will require an examination by a qualified medical professional to make such a diagnosis. For serious cases you may elect to have surgery to fully open the nasal passages.

Fortunately, most cases of nasal snoring aren't so serious and don't require such invasive means to get relief. Since many cases of snoring are caused by restricted airflow, you could use a nasal separator. This device fits into both nostrils, opening them and gently forcing them outward, allowing more air to flow freely, thus eliminating or moderating your snoring.

A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine will help keep your airway open. This machine is particularly used in the treatment of sleep apnea, which is associated with snoring. You will have to wear a mask while you sleep, which some people find uncomfortable.

These are but a few of the remedies available for nose snoring. No matter what causes you to snore, you will be able to find a product or treatment that will give you the restful sleep you require - and deserve.
