subject: A Short Overview Of Modern Table Lamps [print this page]

Is your ceiling full of recessed lighting that just isn't working for you? Wanting a bit more light, or light in a different spot? Table lamps might be your solution. They are attractive, useful, and serve as a nice accent to your decor. They will allow for a warmer, homier, look and a less rigid design scheme.

As lighting has focused on the look of the whole room in the last several years, sometimes practical lighting has been ignored. Your painting may look beautiful, with overhead lighting, however, this lighting will not be appropriate for an individual who wants to sit and read a book. Maybe you've redecorated, invested in a specific style of furniture, or moved things around and the original lighting is no longer adequate for the purpose of the room.

Choosing appropriate lighting will require that you identify what the primary purpose of the room is and who will be using the room. The types of lighting that is selected for small children will be different that that selected for a home that is inhabited solely by grown-ups. Choosing lamps that reflect the style and design of a room will be cost effective and provide a great way to expand your decor affordably.

Lamps have been used almost since the invention of fire. Historically lighting was provided by oil and gas lamps. When electricity was introduced to homes, many people converted their oil lamps to electricity and this design style has been maintained through home design to this day. Many homes lack overhead lighting in rooms other than the kitchen and bathroom because historically, oil lamps were used in all other rooms in a home.

You may want to select a lamp that can provide the soft glow of yesteryear, but also give focused primary lighting when needed. This is easily accomplished with the multi-dimensional aspects of many lamps manufactured today.

If you have a specific purpose for the your new lighting, deciding on the type of lighting you want will require making some basic decisions about the primary purpose of the lighting and who will be handling the lamp. It will be much easier to select a lamp that is sturdy and has a touch-point system in a room that will be used by small children. Choosing lamps that provide multiple levels of direct lighting will give a person who enjoys hobbies the opportunity to employ soft lighting for general use, but direct lighting for reading, sewing, fly tying, and other projects.

With a wide price range, and near infinite selection, you are sure to find something that suits you. Maintaining a budget will be much easier when you select table lamps that fit your needs and requirements as well as your aesthetic style.
