You have heard it said, and it is true in many respects, that you are as old as you feel. We would add to the statement, you are as old as the lifestyle choices, but you do not have to put up with the chronic conditions that plague many Americans if you choose to follow a healthy lifestyle plan. And it is never too late to change, just by making a few changes at any age you can experience great strides in your health and in your outlook for the future!

One of the best ways to maintain your health as you age is to exercise. If that sounds like punishment rather than reward, think again because your idea of exercise is off kilter. What do we lose as we age? Flexibility, balance, and muscle tone. The loss does not have to be inevitable if you maintain what is referred to as functional fitness. The goal is to move your body in ways that will improve the overall function of your body for everyday use, and the possibilities for improving your functional fitness are limited only by your motivation, not your current health condition or the condition of your family budget. For instance, to improve the functional fitness of your cardiovascular system you can simply take brisk walks and add an abs toner machine of sorts that is worn around your waist that tones your abdominal muscles while you walk. To improve your flexibility you train yourself to reach behind you without turning your body, slowly at first, but the more you do it, the more flexible, or functional you become. If it helps to motivate you, put a plate of cookies on the counter, stand with your back to the counter, and then reach back to grab one off the plate. It does not cost you a thing, other than a batch of cookies, and of course, eating the cookies defeat the purpose of improving your overall health! If that does not float your boat, you can use an abs toner machine while standing on one foot while brushing your teeth. You may ask what functional fitness does that improve, well, standing on one foot helps to improve your balance, and if you do it every time you brush your teeth, you will soon see an improvement in your balance. Again, if you wear an EMS belt that stimulates your ab muscles to contract and expand you are improving your muscle tone. You see what we mean; the possibilities are endless. When you begin to look at your daily life as a platform for maintaining and improving your physical fitness, everything turns into an opportunity for functional fitness.

You may be 63 or 84 on the outside, but your biological age can be much younger when you CHOOSE to take control of your physical activity. And the good thing is you do not have to spend a lot to improve your functional fitness, no more than a couple of hundred dollars for higher quality abs toner machines.

Consistency is always the key to physical activity, and the more effective the activity or equipment, the better the benefit you will receive.
