An active adult community refers to a community composed of individuals who are 55 years old and above and is working towards catering to the needs of these older age groups with whatever necessities are there. It is one of the many alternatives for older people to continue living their lives than single-family ownership. The community provides the residents maintenance-free living, which would be a problem with old age.

The community is also in close proximity to attractions that could be desirable to older men and provides on-site amenities and activities that the residents would find enjoyable and relaxing. Each community is designed according to different preferences and may take in the form of single-family homes, multi-family dwelling, condominiums, manufactured housing unites or town homes.

These communities exist in order to provide older people to have a chance of living a carefree life while pursuing an independent and active lifestyle. It also provides easy access to a variety of social, educational and recreational activities, which they would enjoy for the rest of their stay in the community. There are also communities that offer a number of crafting, movie screening, golfing and tennis playing activities.

Often, these active adult communities Charlotte has have designated areas for dining and other social activities that the older adults may enjoy. Some of them also offer a number of clubhouses. More often than not, these communities dont cover the daily living needs and medical necessities therefore residents are the ones responsible for their own nutritional needs, laundry and medical requirements.

The HUD or the Department of Housing and Urban Development creates the rules for age-restricted communities. Permanent residents of these areas should be 19 years old and above. The rules require that about 80% of the households in the age-restricted should have 55-year old or older individuals.

The age-targeted adult communities Charlotte NC has are similar to the age-restricted although their way of marketing these communities is to simply include individuals belonging to the age 55 or older bracket but the age requirement of the residents is not specified.
