subject: What You Should Know About Baby Health [print this page]

There are certain things as a parent that you should know about baby health. Babies can get sick a lot easier than adults can because their immune systems have not built up a tolerance to certain things like adults have. This is why it is important to keep your newborn away from any germs that could cause them to get sick.

I know this is not as easy as it sounds but you can do things that will help keep your baby from getting sick. When you have your baby in the hospital you have doctors there to make sure that your newborn is healthy before you can take him or her home. When you get home is when your babies health becomes your primary responsibility.

You can not avoid your baby catching a cold every now and then or even getting an infection in their ear. You can keep your baby pretty healthy by doing a few simple things. However your baby is still going to get the occasional childhood illness from time to time.

An important step to keeping your infant healthy is sterilizing all bottles, pacifiers, and bottle nipples. If you breast feed then you do not have to worry about the bottles and nipples but you should still sterilize the pacifiers. You should know that their will be a lot of people coming in and out of the house when you first bring home baby.

You may want to consider keeping some hand sanitizer close by for all the visitors that will want to hold the baby. If someone comes to visit that is sick or may have recently been sick you should ask them nicely to come back once they are completely better so the baby does not catch what they have. Your friends and family will understand this request.

Before putting new clothing on your baby or putting new bedding in the baby's crib you need to wash it first. People put their hands all over these items in the store and if they have been sick it can transfer to the baby.
