subject: Filler Injections: Know More About Them, Are They For You? [print this page]

If you have scarring or deep hollows in your face, there is something called a facial filler that can help you. It is a quick, in-office procedure with many benefits and few risks. Talking with your doctor about your options can help ensure that you get the results you desire.

Are you tired of looking at your face in the mirror? Do you have scars from old acne or is the aging process happening a little quickly? Or maybe you're tired of spending hundreds of dollars on over the counter creams and "miracle" solutions. Well, there are surgical options available. One of the options is to look in to injectable fillers.

These fillers do exactly what they sound like they do: they fill in areas of the skin that have been affected by scarring or gravity. These can be made of several different materials including collagen from different sources (some require allergy tests a few weeks beforehand), solutions made in laboratories that draw fluid to treated areas, your own fat cells or other things.

Some doctors may be using things that have not been approved, so it is important to have extensive conversations beforehand so that you can research what will be going in to your skin.

Research in general is very important so that you can be an informed patient. Be sure that your surgeon is licensed and can answer all of your questions. One of the things you will discuss with your doctor is your candidacy. Are you a good candidate?

If you have any allergies to synthetic collagen or to beef products, you will most likely be turned down. A lot of these fillers have bovine (cow) chemicals put in to them and if you're allergic, you could have a bad and possibly dangerous reaction.

Secondly, if you have any herpes virus you need to be aware that getting this treatment done can cause an outbreak. If you have several outbreaks already, your doctor will likely prescribe some sort of anti-viral medication beforehand to try and stop it before it comes.

You will also be talked to about expectations. If you're looking simply to rid yourself of wrinkles, there may be better options out there. Fillers literally fill the skin and plump it up. They can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines but do not eliminate wrinkles entirely like some other products out there.

All in all, facial fillers are a readily available quick fix for those whose skin could benefit from it. It is an in-office procedure that can provide multiple benefits. Talking with your doctor is the best way to determine if it is right for you.
