Hosted VoIP - An Option Here I am, stuck on VoIP again. At least I'm not stuck in Lodi. Some of you might be thinking I am beating this theme to death but there is just so much going on with the continuing evolution of VoIP that I would be sued for negligence if I don't talk about it. And we don't want that. Hosted VoIP is becoming a very attractive option. This means using someone else' VoIP system much like the Centrex system of POTS (plain old telephone system) whereby each line is connected to your provider's switch instead of having your own. The good thing is that you don't have to buy your own VoIP system. The bad thing is that with hosted services you never stop paying. It also brings up the connotation of Centrex which companies have shied away from. Let's get back to the good things. Using a hosted system means you don't have to worry about maintenance on ‘that box' in the storage closet. If the system goes down it's not your system to worry about. But that's not a major concern anyway because these systems have redundancy everywhere. If the system ever did go down it would be because of a widespread problem and nobody else would be on the phone...more

Before transitioning your old PSTN system to VoIP, you need to do an analysis to find out whether or not your existing infrastructure is up to the task. Among other things, this means that you need to do a complete audit of your bandwidth and your Internet usage across a certain time frame to figure out if you're ready to implement VoIP. Though ISPs give you an "all you can eat" plan when it comes to bandwidth, they don't guarantee the highest possible speeds and the match between your usage and your pipe width is what will determine your VoIP adoption.Another interesting aspect is that you might also need to figure out your VoIP Bandwidth which might be different from your regular data speed. Strictly speaking this is a very contentious issue coming under the banner of net neutrality, but all ISPs manage their networks. VoIP doesn't use nearly as much bandwidth as some other applications, but if your entire organization is switching to VoIP, the numbers might add up and your ISP can have a problem with that.So testing your VoIP speed is critical before you start and will prevent a lot of headaches in the future. How to test your VoIP speeds The first thing to do is to make a cold...more
