warning light - who ignores them?

What does a warning light do though? Is it something you would ignore? Certainly, if it were a mobile phone you would put it on charge if the light for that flashed at you. Your vehicle, if there were a flashing warning light on the dash informing you something was wrong, would you ignore that? No you wouldn't, it would be silly. What about warning lights we see on the streets and highways or in our neighborhoods? Would we ignore them, well, possibly depending on what it was? Alarms and hazard warnings tend to be lights and we wouldn't generally ignore those.

Therefore, what of a warning light we may see on the road, emergency vehicles, first response vehicles, recovery vehicles and even slow moving heavy loads. All of these things will have a warning light somewhere. There will be a warning light on a police cruiser and probably more than one, as they tend to have a large light bar on the vehicle. Slow moving loads on our roads may have a slowly flashing beacon or strobe light. It doesn't matter what the shape, size or color of a flashing light is they do tend to all act as a warning light.

Why do vehicles have warning lights on them at all? In most instances, it is to protect the personnel in the vehicle by alerting others to their presence. A warning light can also protect us as well. We are likely to respond to a flashing warning light by dropping our speed and moving lanes if we see one in our rear view mirror or up ahead on the road. Obviously, a vehicle speeding up in the rear view with lights and siren need to pass you at speed but with safety and the lights tell you they are there and inform you to get out of their way.

We really shouldn't ignore any warning light. But how many of us do. We tend to think 'Oh it will be okay' or 'I'll be fine and it will right itself' to whatever problem the warning light is advising us of. How many of us have actually run out of fuel in our vehicles because we figured we could get the extra few miles to the gas station, after the fuel warning light has flashed for some time! I think all of us are guilty of ignoring warnings some times, because it is too much bother, it will likely cost us or we just don't think it's important enough.

Any warning light you see on the road or highway should not be ignored. First response vehicles need to pass us and to do that they need to inform us in advance of their approach. Therefore, the flashing lights and sirens are intended to get them where they need to be in as short a time a possible. We as road users need to assist first responders by giving them the space to pass us wherever possible. Likewise, if you see flashing lights ahead the vehicles may be stationary so you need to avoid those and slow your speed. Don't ignore any warning light, but especially those on any emergency vehicles.
