They were the most legendary most celebrated, most mischievous of hippie bands and indeed, they stuck around the longest. They changed legions and legions of scenesters into hardened Deadheads.

The fundamental members of the Grateful Dead comprised of Jerry Garcia banjo and guitar player , Bob Weir guitarist , Ron "Pigpen" McKernan blues man organist , Phil Lesh the classically trained bassist and Bill Kreutzmann drummer (who's stage name was Bill Sommers.)

Did you know that the Grateful Dead were originally called The Warlocks?

Lesh was the last member to join the Warlocks (replacing Dana Morgan Jr.) before they turned the Grateful Dead. With the exception of McKernan, the core of the band stayed together for 30 years, until Garcia's death in 1995.

Lead guitarist Jerry Garcia looked to be the leader of the Grateful Dead. Influenced by bluegrass music, Garcia also performed on the banjo, the pedal steel guitar, in bluegrass bands with mandolinist David Grisman.

The first show with the new name of the Grateful Dead was in San Jose, California on December 4, 1965, at one of Ken Kesey's Acid Tests. Earlier demo tapes have survived, but the first of over 2,000 concerts known to have been recorded by the band's fans was a show at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco on January 8, 1966.
