The New Cuban Revolution

The height of the Cuban-American tensions was the Bay of Pigs Invasion

. Here, American trained Cuban exiles were supported by the then government to assassinate Cuban President Fidel Castro. Since then, the United States of America has imposed both travel as well as trade restrictions with the island nation just off the state of Florida.

Currently the political winds have been at an impasse. Under the Trade Sanctions Reform and Enhancement Act of 2000, exports from the United States such as food and medical products to Cuba would be allowed under permission obtained from the US Commerce Department and the Treasury Department. Other than these licensed exports, the embargo on Cuba remains in full force and effect, with stiff penalties on those found violating the embargo.

Despite such restrictions, there have been inroads to make Cuba part of the United States destinations. The United States Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba was established in 2003 with the objective "to hasten and ease a democratic transition in Cuba." There was a budget to promote the Cuban shift from its current governmental structure to democracy. In its recent report, a plan was formulated to insure that this transition could be institutionalized after the demise of the strongman Castro.

Cuba also has made its own internal changes. Last July 2006, President Fidel Castro transferred many presidential duties to his brother, Raul. In 2008, Cuba inaugurated its new president, Raul Castro. One of the first statements by the younger Castro reads "They (United States) should be very clear that it is not possible to achieve anything in Cuba with impositions and threats. On the contrary, we have always been disposed to normalize relations on an equal plane. What we do not accept is the arrogant and interventionist policy frequently assumed by the current administration of that country." With this pronouncement, a door has been opened for the United States and Cuba to meet and discuss differences and hopefully find an eventual mutually beneficial resolution to the conflict.

As of late, there have been no changes as to the US policy on Cuba nor has there been any retaliatory measures conducted by Cuba against the interventionist policies of the United States. What is clear though that there is a great opportunity for both countries to mutually benefit, with the increased economic power and influence of Cuban-Americans as well as the opportunities available in Cuba. When the winds of politics change, there would be a new Cuban revolution in the making.
