, clean burning diesel engine? Fuel needs to get from the tank to the engine. Diesel pumps are responsible for pushing the fuel through from the tank to the cylinders and evenly distributing it. This type of internal combustion engine uses a high compression ratio of super heated air to automatically ignite the fuel as it is injected into the combustion chamber by the timing system. It differs from gasoline based engines that use spark plugs, rather than relying on the force and heat of the air compression for ignition.

The fuel injector is designed to remove debris and impurities before it gets to the pump.

Diesel pumps break the fuel down into tiny drops and evenly disperse throughout the combustion chamber. What is a diesel pump? It is a component through which the fuel is delivered directly to the cylinder of the diesel engine. Once the fuel is exposed to the super heated air, it is ignited. Many diesel fuel systems have two pumps. One is a low pressure pump that moves the fuel from the tank, through the filters to the high pressure pump. The second, high pressure pump sends the fuel through the injectors into the engine.

Diesel pumps need to be durable enough to withstand the high pressure and heat of the compressed air. The compression rates produced through the diesel injection pump may be as much as 15,000 per square inch, depending on the requirement of the engine. A diesel pump works by effectively controlling the injectors. These components are among the most complex in the system. They have mechanisms by which the amount of fuel being pumped through is controlled. The more fuel that is pumped into the system, the faster the engine.

What is a diesel pump? There are two primary types of diesel fuel injection pumps. Inline-injection pumps have a pump and plunger attached to each engine cylinder. The fuel enters one end of the unit where the plunger housings are located. It moves through to the combustion chamber. The movement of the plungers allows the fuel into the chamber where it meets the highly compressed, heated air. Distributor injection diesel pumps have only one pump, rather than one unit attached to each cylinder. It rotates to meet each combustion chamber as needed and is electronically controlled.
