What Is Facial Liposuction?

Most people have heard of liposuction (also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy)

. In fact, it seems that it's pretty hard to avoid hearing about the procedure these days. Lipoplasty has ranked as the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in America for twelve out of the last thirteen years. Last year, even during a recession, nearly 350,000 Americans underwent the surgery. The year before, the number was around 80,000 higher.

The surgery is used to remove excess fat from a person's body. It uses tiny needles called cannulas to break up and suction unwanted fat out of the body. Most people know about how the surgery can help their bellies, thighs, hips, or buttocks. However, not everybody know about how the surgery can provide significant help in making one's face appear younger, trimmer and more beautiful.

The amount of facial fat one should have is a sort of balancing act. Too little fat will make a person's face appear hollow, overly sharp and old. On the other hand, having too much fat can also produce unattractive results. Having too much fat around the cheeks and mouth can produce large, drooping jowls. Having too much fat around the jaw and chin can produce double chins and can detract from a strong, streamlined jaw line.

Early in the history of liposuction, it was difficult to successfully work on the face. The fact is a very delicate area, and so it requires a sensitive touch. Luckily, advances in the fineness of modern surgical instruments has made it much easier to work on areas such as the face. Facial lipoplasties are performed by using a tool called a cannula. A cannula is a small, hollow tube which is hooked up to a suction device. The cannulas used in lipoplasty today frequently measure only millimeters in diameter, which means that they an be provide an extremely fine degree of control.

Lipoplasty of the face does not usually involve removing as body areas such as the belly or the buttocks. As such, facial procedures frequently are less traumatic. Some amount of bruising and swelling is normal, but these symptoms frequently pass within a week or two. Patients can usually return to work and other normal activities within about a week of their surgery.

If you are interested in getting a lipoplasty of the face, you should consider speaking with a surgeon in your area. Many lipectomy surgeons offer free consultations to potentially interested clients.
