You know it is amazing just how much regulation there is in satellite television. If you happen to look at the history of satellite TV, you will see what I mean. Many countries have prevented their citizens from viewing neighboring satellite TV channels. I guess protectionism will never die.

The first commercial satellite: Intelisat 1 was the first commercial satellite in geo-synchronous orbit. If you know satellite TV you may know it as "Early Bird." It has been in the sky since 1965. There were earlier communication satellites, but this was the first commercial one.

Canada's Restrictions: What I did find really interesting is how much Canada has restricted satellite viewing. Canadians cannot get Direct TV or their channels, well not legally. They find ways on the gray market or even the black market to get them.

Satellite Pirates: Canadian satellite providers continue to be plagued by the devices sold on the black market which "pirate" or "steal" their signals. They also have problems with completely lawful devices which can be reprogrammed to receive "pirate" TV. Arrrgggh matey! There can be no official statistics, but the use of American satellite services in Canada appears to be declining. Some claim this is probably due to a combination of the exchange rate between the Canadian and U.S. currencies and increasingly aggressive police enforcement. Whatever the reason, there seems to be a decline.

What really is happening: I offer another reason. Internet satellite TV. Inter satellite TV has been available for a while, but it has really taken off as the economy has gone south. Which makes me wonder why when something is bad, people say "it goes south." Sorry for the digression. I believe that there are subscribers finding the legal way to get TV from where ever you are.Satellite TV on the internet bypasses all of the transmission regulations that apply to television, so you can what whatever channels you like from where you want to watch them. No wonder so many people have started going in that direction.

0 Regulations: Right now there are no regulations concerning the satellite TV on the internet. I am sure the governments of this world will try to get their hands in our pockets with taxes and fees, but for now, we are all safe.
