I write this brief "review" - let 's call for a public service announcement - so you can make Philips DVP5990 DVD Player Region-Fri This works well with the suffix (or DVP5990/F7 DVP5990/37) and probably other changes perhaps is the size of retail trade was sold through a window, or maybe just a firmware reference. In any case I will not elaborate on the technical aspects of this model, except to say that is a great value for fifty dollars tot sixty United States is usually sold. I can not speak of the virtues of a particular supplier here, but whatever you do, do not pay a premium for a company of a "DVP5990 region free, because everyone will do what I say below. (Or, at least one person reported , you can simply pay more for a piece of paper with the same instructions to get to do it yourself!)
This unit is compatible with HDMI, and even includes a USB port on front panel. It plays almost everything and before it is region free. Even if the manufacturer does not want to admit it, the hardware DVD players to play all regions, and low (very weak) protection is added depending on whether the product is sold. U.S. = Region 1, Region 2 = Europe, etc.
Many DVD players can be easily returned to the region default 0 (PLAY ALL) set up by simply entering a code hidden the remote control, and this is no exception DVP5990. I will be very easy for you below. Make sure the DVD tray is empty before you start. And, of course, a non-Region 1 DVD actually prove that it works fine.
(Phase 0: Connect your DVD player, but make sure the tray is empty, ie not to put a disc in.)
1. Press the Setup button on the remote.
2. (">") Using right arrow button on your remote, scroll down to "Preference Page". No need to press 'OK'.
(Note that if a disk is not allowed access to the menu preferences).
3. 1,3,8,9,3,1 pressure in exactly that way on the remote. (Again, there is no need to press "OK".)
4. Region code is displayed. (Almost certainly Region 1 shows, unless someone has already changed for you.) Press the arrow once to select ("^") "0".
5. Press the Setup button on the remote.
I propose to repeat steps 1-3 to confirm the setting of the region.
Congratulations, you now have a region free player because it was designed Philips factory! You can now play discs from around the world, many of which are cheaper or just available for sale when no other versions. Would not it be nice if everything in life was that easy?
PS the code works the same for many models in the range of Philips.

Works as advertised....
The Philips DVP-5990 works great, just as advertised, that is after you enter the "hack" that is included. I had read reviews referring to the hack and others that said the product worked fine right out of the box. In reality, both are true.
What you have to realize is that you are essentially buying the hack, because the player itself can be purchased at any local electronics retailer. The end result is that you get around the products limitations programed into it by the manufacturer.
The instructions for entering the hack are easy and really don't take more than five minutes to complete, and once that is done it will play dvds from any region in the world. So far I have only used it for regions 1 and 2. But, as of yet I have no complaints. Overall I would say it was a good purchase. After having advised any prospective buyer about what was detailed above, I would recommend it.

Good DVD player, but not more region free than any other
I ordered this DVD player since I wanted to be able to play both American and European movies. It's clearly stated to be region free. However, it is not. You need to hack it, which one can do with just about any DVD player on the market.
I also think it's annoyingly slow at ejecting the DVD:s.
It's easy to use though, even my daughter who's 3 knows how to play movies. The setting menues are also simple to figure out.
I'm really happy with the DVD player.
(Can't say the same about the seller though. They said they sent the player and it took several weeks to receive it. I thought I'd been fooled, but they claim that it was ruined during shipping and got replaced. A quick e-mail with that information would have been so much better, than letting me wait and not responding to my e-mail inquiries.)

Great product. Does everything that it says it does. I use this player to watch American, European as well as burned DIVX European DVD's. Not a problem. I would definitely recommend it.

It's the right DVD player I've been looking for
I've looked for a region-free DVD player for a long time, finally I found it at Amazon.com. It can play all kinds of discs without changing any setting. The memory function is very helpful. It starts playing at the very spot where it stopped the latest time when you turned off the machine. It really save the time that you don't need to search the place you wanted, especially when you watch the drama series. I hook the DVD player to my Sony Bravia 46 inch LCD TV. It switches the TV input automatically to DVD player, when the DVD player starts loading disc; it takes 3 seconds of delay though. The HDMI port is a plus, only one cable completes the connection. The price is also very affordable, I recommend this product.
