Reduce your portion sizes by 10%.Just by decreasing your portion sizes by ten percent, you will be reducing your calorie intake, and that means your weight gain will slow down. Once your body is used to that reduction, decrease portions by another 10%, and so on, until your weight stops going up, and starts coming down! As long as the calories you burn exceed the calories you eat, you WILL lose weight.
Change your cooking methods. Often, it's not what you eat, but how you cook it, that makes all the difference. A baked potatoe, with a low fat topping, for instance, is a great low GI, low fat meal. That same potatoe, deep fried, into french fries, is a calorie dense diet killer! The same goes for everything else - grilled steaks are great, chicken fried steaks aren't, and so on.
Substitute. Even if you love creamy sauces, you don't have to gain weight because of it. Make substititions - swap low fat yogurt for sour cream, or switch to low GI, whole grain bread instead of white bread.
Opt for unrefined products. It's a little known fact that increasing dietary fiber is one of the easiest ways to start losing weight without changing your diet much. That's because fiber helps to speed food through your digestive system, decreasing bloating and gas, AND the number of calories you absorb from it!
Clear out your cabinets. If your kitchen cabinets are full of high salt, high fat, processed convenience foods, then that's what you're going to snack on when you feel the urge! Clear out everything that's not healthy in your house, and donate those products to charity. Then buy dried and fresh fruit, air popped popcorn and other healthy snacks, and keep a stock of them. They'll be what you reach for when you're feeling hungry!
Drink more water. Another little known fact about weight gain (and loss) is that often, when we feel hungry, it's not because we want food, but because we're thirsty or dehydrated. Drink water more often, and you won't be fooled into eating more!
Identify your triggers. We all have triggers that make us eat. For some, it's watching TV, for others, it's feeling blue. Figure out your triggers, and come up with alternatives to eating. You might find that learning to knit while you watch TV keeps your hands busy, or that talking on the phone helps when you're feeling down. If you know what triggers your overeating, then you can avoid those triggers!
Enlist help. Trying to lose weight when your family is still eating their takeout pizza, or when your colleagues are going out for pub lunches is not easy. If you have a weight loss goal, speak to the people in your life, and get them to help. Who knows, you might all be able to lose weight together, and live healthier, happier lives!
Celebrate your victories, and forget your failures. We all have days when that candy bar is just calling our names! It's okay to slip once in a while - don't let those days get you down. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on your eating plan. When you succeed, however, whether it's by sticking to your meal plans, or by losing pounds or inches, reward yourself! Just choose non food based rewards, like a movie with the girls, or a new pair of shoes.
Don't crash diet. EVER. Crash diets are not healthy. They make you feel like you're starving, and if you've been on them a few days, you're likely to come off them a little like that little yellow guy from Pac Man - eating EVERYTHING in site. Rather take weight loss slow and easy, and make it sustainable.
