10 Tips to Setting Up A Successful Blog
If you are interested in creating a Blog and want to have a successful launch that
will help you to become recognized on the internet then I encourage you to follow these 10 steps that will help you to set up a successful blog about your passions, business, life etc
Get Your Own Domain Name & Hosting ~ Owning your domain and hosting is a very important factor in your blog. You want your domain to be a "branding" effect as it has a greater impact than a domain that is forwarded and masked. Having your own domain name is what will separate you from all the other "hobby" bloggers that are out there. Working on "Self Branding" is what will get your name out there and let's everyone know you are a serious blogger. Owning your domain name will allow you to use a hosting company to create a more powerful and professional blog. For instance withwww.SusanGoodknight.com I purchased my domain through
Godaddy.com and I haveWordPress.org hosting. This was extremely simple to set up as at the time I purchased my domain I also purchased hosting for wordpress then completed my transaction. Now, I have my "branded domain" and I have hosting through wordpress to create a nice looking blog.
Learn Your Software ~ Once you determine what blog hosting software you'll be using to create your blog get familiar with the set up. Blogger, WordPress or TypePad are very different from one another. Depending on what blogging service you choose to work with get educated on the software so you can customize your blog. Learn to work with and change up your templates, pictures, content and blog roll.
Learn from other great Bloggers that are out there ~ Read many of the successful blogs that are currently out there and follow them. Do not be afraid to ask questions and study the blogs that are currently set up. One system that I love for looking at other blogs iswww.BetterNetworker.com and is a blogging community where you add your blog content and view other content. This is a great way to not only learn about blogging from some of the great bloggers out there likeMike Dillard and
Katie Freiling but you'll be able to share your very own content of your blog to gain an audience as well. Katie Freiling has created a wonderful online Tribe for bloggers as well called
TheUnifiedTribe and if you are going to be serious about getting your blog out there these are the 2 communities I highly recommend each blogger be untied with as you'll not only learn but will also grow.
Write in your blog consistently ~ Adding new content to your blog once or twice a month really isn't going to allow you to build new readers on a consistent basis. You'll not have the search engines crawling your blog as often as you would writing in your blog daily or at least 3 times each week. You create a blog around your passion and you will always have something to write about. That's what blogging is all about. You want to give informative articles and information about your blog. So, if your blogging about Personal Growth then you'll want to create new articles for your blog at least 3 times each week on Personal Development and Growth. You can talk about your journey to Personal Development, things you recommend and ways you stay inspired. As long as you are passionate about what you are writing there is no end to the amount of content you can place on your blog. You'll gain followers who subscribe to your RSS and wait for another article to come out.
Blogging is building a fellowship ~ Your readers do not want to be "pitched" to about things you are selling or marketing. They are looking for information and a blogger who honestly cares about the content they are sharing. Blogging is building a fellowship, a virtual family that is searching for your information. Once you build the trust of your readers they will be open to here the resources you recommend and want to share. When you care you'll find faithful followers that will return to read your blog consistently.
Allow Blog Communication ~ When you get your blog set up you want to allow for comments and track backs. A great widget you may want to place on your blog is a "Top Commentators" widget. This will allow for your top commentators to be listed on your blog pages. Doing this allows a link back to their own blog or website. You want to allow for the interactivity of fellow bloggers to comment on your articles.
Read other Blogs and Comment ~ When you get out there and read other blogs that are similar to yours you will be able to network with them, learn from them and share with them. You will read their articles and comment on it. When you leave your comment it will link back to your own blog. So, when you leave good comments that are worthy of the post then you'll gain trust and fellowship as new readers will visit your blog.
Create a Blogroll ~ This is a list that will link to other blogs that you like. This is where communication comes in handy with other bloggers. In the land of blogging we love reciprocal linking. You can contact other bloggers about swapping your links for the blogroll. This allows for more readers to find you and also looks good for the search engines as well. Its about sharing and caring and this will help many all around.
Notify the Search Engines of Updates ~ When you make changes to your blog with new posts it is important to let people know about this by pinging. Doing this will let everyone know there is new content to read on your blog. You can use Ping Services such asPingOMatic.com to notify the updates to your blog.
Use an RSS Feed Reader ~ This is a very popular and easy way for your readers to follow your blog. When you use a RSS Feed such as FeedBurner through Google or another popular one FeedDemon. There are others you can use through Yahoo or MSN. Allowing your readers to subscribe to your RSS feed will help them to be notified of the new content you have placed on your blog.
So, there you have 10 simple steps to help you get your blog set up and on the road to becoming successful. Remember that it will take you some time to build up your blog and readers but with consistency you'll become a master blogger in no time at all.
