Acne Tips | The Sugar-acne Connection
The role of diet in cases of acne has been debated in the medical community
. Scientific studies in 1969 and 1971 seemed to indicate that diet plays no part in the development of acne. Acne tips based on this finding centered around hygiene. More recent studies demonstrate otherwise - that certain foods do tend to cause or worsen acne.
As the trend to more natural and holistic therapies gains momentum, scientists and health researchers are looking for alternatives to traditional medical treatment for acne. One area of this research explores the effects that sugar has on the development of acne symptoms.
Acne Tip #1: The Sugar-Acne Connection
Trial studies have indicated that acne sufferers generally have higher levels of a simple sugar called glucose in their skin. One study in particular showed that this is because people with acne have more difficulty processing sugar correctly, much like people with diabetes.
For this reason, one researcher referred to acne as "skin diabetes." Like in cases of diabetes, insulin has been shown to be helpful in the treatment of acne. This is due to insulin's ability to help the body process sugar.
Acne Tip #2: Dietary Changes
An easier, healthier alternative to taking insulin is reducing refined sugars in your diet. Refining sugar is removing the sugar (sucrose) from the plant it is contained in. On average, Americans consume 120 to 150 pounds of sugar annually. This amounts to over 600 calories from sugar per day.
Sugar is obviously abundant in many snacks and desserts, but it is "hidden" in many other foods such as breads, peanut butter, and mayonnaise. If you are unsure of the sugar content, check the label. Look out for other terms for sugar such as fructose, glucose, and maltose.
Acne Tip #3: Chromium
Another dietary element useful for acne is chromium, a mineral that has been shown to not only aid the body in sugar tolerance, but also regulate proteins and fats. Meats, whole-grain products, and fruits and vegetables such as grapes and broccoli are good sources.
