2010 Idaho Football Predictions
The Idaho Vandals capped off a pretty amazing season with a 43-42 win over Bowling
Green in the Humanitarian Bowl, it was the first time the Vandals had made it to postseason play since 1998. Idaho had won just three regular season games and one conference game in the past two seasons, before finishing 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the WAC last season. The Vandals will look to build off the momentum from last season with 14 starters back, but will have only four on the offensive side of the ball. To help you get going on the 2010 season, here is a quick breakdown of what the Vandals will send to the field, plus my thoughts on where they will finish the season in the WAC.
Offense:
The Vandals welcome back senior starting quarterback Nathan Enderle, who threw for 2,906 yards with 22 touchdowns to just nine interceptions in 11 starts last season. The Vandals are going to need Enderle to continue to get better if they are going to repeat the 33 points a game the offense put on the board last season.
The Vandals take a huge hit in the running game with the loss of DeMaundray Woolridge, as he led the Vandals with 979 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. Senior Deonte' Jackson and junior Princeton McCarly figure to team up and share the load this season, and should be able to put up comparable numbers if they stay healthy and they get similar play out of the o-line.
The Vandals also lose their top receiving threat in Max Komar, who had 63 catches for 1,052 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Idaho does get back starters Preston Davis and Maurice Shaw, and one of the top tight ends in the conference in Daniel Hardy. So even with the loss of Komar, I look for the Vandals passing attack to improve this season.
The only question the offense has heading into the season, is what kind of production are they going to get out of an offensive line that only returns junior left tackle Matt Cleveland. That is a lot of holes to fill in one offseason, and if this unit struggles I think the Vandals could make a big turn towards the bottom of the WAC this season.
Defense:
With 10 starters returning on the defense this season, the Vandals have to be hoping they can show some significant improvements on this side of the ball. Up front the Vandals return all four starters on the defensive line, including two of the best defensive linemen in the conference in senior defensive tackle Jonah Sataraka and senior defensive end Aaron Lavarias.
The Vandals also have two of the top linebackers in the conference in senior Jojo Dickson and junior Robert Siavii at the two outside spots. Senior Paul Senescall returns at middle linebacker, and with all three starters back this unit should be much better in 2010.
The Vandals should also show some nice improvements in the secondary this season, as they return one of the best safeties in the conference in senior free safety Shiloh Keo and get the starting corner duo of junior Kenneth Patten and sophomore Aaron Grymes back as well.
WAC Prediction 7th: Even though the defense should be much better than it was a season ago, it will be hard to make a huge improvement on the 36 points a game they allowed last season. As far as the offense, I think it is going to be too much to ask for this team to repeat the same success it had a year ago with four new starters on the offensive line. I think the Vandals finish up right around the 4-5 win mark.
