Hydroponics basically means that you grow your plants in water instead of in soil

. With the advances in the technology used in Hydroponic gardening, almost any kind of plant generally grown in soil or earth can be cultivated. Hydroponics means that you don't need as much space as a regular soil-based farm, and since you're growing your plants in nutrient-rich water, farmers have more control over what kind of nutrients they add to help their plants become more productive. More and more farmers are moving towards Hydroponics because of this and because they don't need the acreage that conventional farms require. Meaning they can produce more in less space.

However, Hydroponics isn't without it's common problem. Just like soil-based farming that has it's own share of common issues, farmers who focus on Hydroponic farming have their own issues which they need to overcome so they can produce healthier crops that yield more. In order to be truly successful, Hydroponic farmers need to be able to recognize the potential problems, and prevent them before they become damaging to their crops.

Just like conventional farming, Hydroponic farming can be susceptible to pests and insects. One of the most dangerous pest problems is the fungus gnat. Although these insects don't do much damage to hydroponic systems when they're adults, they're larvae can really damage your plants. They lay eggs in the nutrient-rich water or planting medium and the larva can eat through your roots, which can cause the plants roots to rot. Controlling fungus gnats is just one of the things that Hydroponics farmers need to do in order to make sure their plants are healthy and productive.

Another potential pest problem is aphids. They can cause your plants to become deformed. Farmers should watch out for a sticky residue that can damage their plants. Most of the time, if an aphid infestation is already happening in your system, all you can do is cutting off the affected areas and using insecticide sprays on the area to prevent further damage. Aphids can also carry diseases and viruses that can quickly spread to the rest of your crop.

The third common pest problem for Hydroponic systems is the whitefly. They also carry diseases that could spread in your system. Generally found on the underside of leaves, whiteflies can do serious damage to your systems and perhaps even cause you to loose thousands of dollars in produce.
