Everyday theres a war going on. No, Im not talking about in Afghanistan, but good guess. Im referring to the war spanning across the country, between homeowners and burglars. As an ADT monitoring center dispatcher, Ive taken calls ranging from a football thrown through a window to homeowners who were just held at gunpoint. Every day criminals are developing better tools and strategies to invade your home, and the more familiar you are with these, the better. Simply having a security system is no longer an adequate defense against todays crafty burglars. Following are three of the newest tricks Ive seen and how to easily prevent them from being executed on you and your home.

1. The overly friendly neighbor

Most of the time they arent even a real neighbor, and all of the time they arent really friendly. Its always a good idea to be as familiar with your neighbors as possible not only will they be useful as potential witnesses in the event of a burglary, but it will be easier to spot out an imposter in cases like this. Often times the burglar will pass by posing as a neighbor asking to borrow something thats in your garage (usually tools). In these cases, his intent is most likely to be near you when you use your keypad to open up your garage door. Keypad garage door openers are becoming increasingly prevalent theses days, and it doesnt help that most of them are only four digit combinations. Once the thief has watched you enter your code, all he has to do from there is wait for you to leave and its one stop shopping time at your house.

2. The faux breakdown

If you ever find yourself behind a car that wont move at a green light, dont get out of your car. In situations like this, the burglar will have someone (usually not far from your home) block you at a stoplight. Their intention is to get you impatient enough to get out of your car and talk to the driver from that point they will pull a gun on you while their friend drives off with your running and unlocked car where they will go back to your home. From there, theyll use the garage door opener from your car to break in. Always remember to be open minded in situations like this. Burglars arent only sketchy looking guys with tattoos and piercings they employ anyone to do their dirty work ranging from young girls to even children. If you genuinely think the guy in front of you needs help, be sure to make sure theres people watching and to memorize his license plate before you step out of your car.

3. The bible salesman

Well, it could actually be anyone posing as a door-to-door solicitor I just thought the Bible Salesman would sound cooler. Burglars that use this strategy will knock on your door posing as a solicitor. This could be anything from a scouting mission to a way of gaining access to even distracting you while another burglar breaks in through the back door. The best way to handle these situations is to just avoid answering the door completely, but if you somehow do find yourself talking to a solicitor, dont let them inside your house. Its not even safe to look away from them because they could quickly slap a strip of tape on the side of your door, preventing it from clicking and locking.
