Core work should not mean endless sit ups, bicycle crunches or circus-like fit ball exercises. You need to strengthen the many muscles around the back, abs and glutes, and the simplest exercises are the most effective. It doesn't matter what level you are - a beginner or advanced lifter - these three exercises will do you good. Whether you want to lift super heavy weights or just make life easier, these simple core exercises are a must.

1 Pallof Press

You can use a cable machine at the gym or a simple resistance band at home for this. Stand side on to the source of resistance and bring the band or cable towards your midline. Keeping your abs and glutes tight, press the band directly in front of you. I like to use 3 sets of 8 presses. This is a deceptively challenging exercise and there are many variations to do as your core control increases.

2 Lateral Band Walk

Place a small resistance band around your ankles. Keeping your body upright and controlled, simply walk sideways. This will seriously switch on your glutes! Incorporate this lateral walk 2 or 3 times into your warm up.

3 Farmers walk

Pick up a weight (or object) and walk. Activate your core muscles to keep yourself upright and to stop yourself leaning over. You can carry one object in one hand, objects of the same weight in both hands or objects of different weights in both hands. This is effective as part of your warm up, or use heavy weights and make it a tough finisher to your workout.
