3 Tips to Buy Real Battle Ready Swords

When looking to buy genuine battle ready swords I have found there are three things that are important to know. The first is the type of steel used, second how well the steel is tempered and third is the tang of the sword.

Authentic swords are always forged using high carbon steel. While cheap swords found online are usually constructed of stainless steel. If a blade is longer than 12 inches it becomes very brittle when made of stainless steel and not safe for a real sword. The two most common types of carbon steel used for making battle ready swords are AISI 10xx and 5160.

Real Japanese swords are made from the AISI 10xx group, which is plain steel made up of iron, manganese and carbon. The carbon contented in AISI 1050 is .50% and AISI 1070 is .70%. This will give you a guide to go by. A general rule is higher carbon, harder steel and lower carbon is tougher steel. The second kind (AISI 5160) is made with low Chromium around 0.7% and silicon 0.2%. This helps the swords to be tough, durable and more resistant to corrosion.

Real swords have to be accurately heat treated and tempered so they won't be too brittle or too soft. Be careful when looking at the write up of a sword and they say it is made with carbon steel but nothing of heat treatment or of the manufacturer. Swords can be made of carbon steel but not necessarily functional battle ready swords if they haven't been properly heat treated.

There is a balance that has to be achieved when tempering the sword, heat treating the wrong way can completely ruin the blade. Some websites and businesses brag that their swords are made of excellent quality steel with no mention of tempering of the steel. So before you buy ask questions and research who makes them and how. Because some sellers seem to think swords made of High Carbon Steel can be called battle ready swords.

A true battle ready sword has a full tang, the piece of metal inserted into the handle that is attached to the blade. If the sword doesn't have a full tang it may break when struck, or come loosen when it is swung. The weakest point on most swords is where the tang is attached to the blade.

A true full tang is forged as part of the blade and then peened or threaded over the pommel. If the tang is welded on the sword after it is called "rat tail tang". The tang of the Japanese swords is often held in place in the handle with one or two pegs called "Mekugi". Half tangs and rat-tail tangs break easy when the sword is swung hard and comes in contact with something. Push tangs need to be secured so they don't fly out, so the true functional battle ready swords have to have a full tang.

When out looking for real battle ready swords always make sure that all 3 things are in place to make sure you have a weapon that is worthy of being called battle ready.
