Mosquitoes have been around for 100 million years and during that time they have diversified into 3,000 different species that differ vastly. A mosquito develops from egg to adulthood in four to seven days but a male is expected to live only between 10-20 days,the female life span is 3 -100 days. During that short lifetime a female can lay between 100 and 300 eggs at any one time and between 1000 and 3000 in total and the majority of mosquito will remain within a 1 mile radius of their breeding area.

Their lifes behaviour is pre-programmed by instincts and these programs are being refined constantly by evolution. The mosquito has managed to adapt with with great success to all different climates from the equater to the artic and so they have developed the means of locasting indigenous blood hosts in each locale. Mosquitoes have different preferences some of them prefer frogs, others birds and others prefer mammals.

The mosquito is now spreading diseases more deadly and frequently than it has for the last 30 years and it has been reported by the BBC News that mosquitoes are now killing more than one million people a year worldwide. It is also a known fact that mosquito- bourne disease kills more people than any other single factor. They carry a wide range of deadly diseseses including Malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever in humans. In the United States of America they are known to spread several types of encephalitis, cats and dogs don't escape either as they contract heart worms passed on by mosquito.

It may come as a surprise to learn that the mosquito doesn't feed on blood though the female does require a blood meal to ensure that her eggs develop. Adult mosquiotes like to feed on the nectar of flowers juices and they have a liking for decaying matter to give them energy for flying.The larval and pupal stages are to be found in a variety of aquatic habitats these can include old discarded cans and buckets, tyers,gutters,pools and ponds salt marshes and old ditches in fact anything containing old stagnent water are heaven to mosquitoes. A good tip if you live in a area plagued by mosquito it is a good idea to clear any standing water this will help reduce the risk.

The fact that nearly everyone can profess to being bitten at sometime whilst on holiday, out camping fishing or travelling it probably comes as a surprise that the mosquito has very bad eyesight but what they can do is zoom in on their target like a heat seeking missile. The reason being that the spherical arrangement of their compound eyes each eye is seperated from the next one by blind spots. This results in them not being able to see you until they are 30 feet away and even at that distance they don't know if you are a human a tree stump or litter bin etc, but as they get closer their extra sensetive thermal receptors that are found on the tip of the antennae are able to locate blood near the surface of the skin. During periods of high humidity these receptors increase dramatically and thats is when you become meat and drink and in places such as swamps wetlands and forests you stick out like a sore thumb to the mosquito.
