First of all, you need to pick up mining as your other primary profession. Either that or have an alt do it, but whatever you do don't buy your materials from the auction house, it's a total waste of gold. You're going to need quite a bit of ore, and I wouldn't even like to tell you how much it would cost to buy it on the auction house! Also, remember this: Your Arclight Spanner is going to be your constant companion. Almost everything engineers make require one, so make sure you always have one! You could also throw a few up on the auction house for engineers too lazy to make their own.

Second, and you're going to notice this quite early on - you make a lot of crap in engineering before you get to the good stuff. No one will want it, but don't be too quick to vendor it, because it might be needed to make something else down the line. What you need to remember above all else is that making this stuff is levelling you up and enabling you to make better, awesome stuff along the line. And boy, does engineering get some fantastically cool stuff! You'll get items to resurrect people, you'll get all sorts of laser guns and it will be awesome. So keep that in mind when it seems like all you're churning out is useless items.

When you get to the higher levels of engineering, you are going to be indispensable in raids. Because there are so few engineers out there (because hardly any of them realise what I've told you here), they are highly prized! You will be able to summon repair bots, so people don't have to leave the instance to repair or buy reagents. You'll also be able to produce a portable mailbox in case people want to check their mail! No other profession can do anything like this, it's totally unique. And even better, the piece de resistance is this - you can make the mechano-hog. Oh yes. People will pay 1000s for an engineer to craft this for them, and that's on top of providing the materials to you as well. So do make sure you keep an eye out for anyone wanting one made, because you will make a fortune doing it!
