4 Steps To A Great Singing Voice That Will Give You Star Quality
I love distance running, but there were times- in my more immature days
,when I overdid it and strained my leg muscles. You need to understand,as a singer, that your vocal apparatus can be damaged too. You need to go gently to start with.
Tip One: Warm ups,as in athletics, are crucial. Make a regular habit of spending 15 minutes or so exercising your voice prior to actual singing.
Doing this as a regular habit, will not only improve your range and quality but above all keep you from straining your vocal chords which can damage your voice beyond irreparably, especially if you are prone to hoarseness.
So-start with gentle diaphragmatic breathing-get a flow and rhythm. Relax your body especially in the throat area; hum the scale smoothly and quietly. Stand,do not sit or you will cramp your diaphragm.
Tip Two: Ensure you have lots of water to hand. Never drink it hurriedly, and never drink it ice cold.It is best at room temperature.
Do this before during and after warm-up and singing training. Do not ever neglect this.
You may wonder why cold water is a problem. Simple;it tenses up the muscles and causes a kind of spasm. This is similar to going out on a really cold day,and not properly dressed for the weather.Brrr!
On the subject of water, incidentally;it takes a period of time for full bodily hydration,so to sip water all day long would be beneficial.
Tip Three: Be aware of your limitations. Keep in the comfortable registers to start with;do not attempt any vocal gymnastics off the bat!
Tip Four:I have noticed that the truly great singers, especially the operatic tenors, have a tendency to speak very very quietly.Mario Lanza for example, was known for his very gentle and quiet speaking voice. He was of course, conserving his voice. Sensible. Make a note.
So,never shout,do not try to speak above loud noises such as in factories etc..When in a noisy environment,DROP YOUR VOICE BELOW THE NOISE LEVEL. You will be heard perfectly clearly. It works.Try it!
By practising these disciplines religiously, you will greatly minimise the dangers to your voice inherent in singing, and you will find your voice will have clarity and strength.
You will discover the joy of singing for extended periods with total freedom. If you do not have a singing coach,or a professional training programme my advice is to get one as soon as possible. Take a look at my recommendations below:Good Singing!
