To be a successful project manager, youll need to have the skills and knowledge to be able to handle office politics when youre working on a small or large project. You dont want the project to suffer and many people are depending on you to make things flow smoothly.

When creating a list of goals for your project, you should keep office politics in mind. Everyone has their own opinion on how the project should go and if you have multiple opinions, then the project is going to go nowhereor progress really slow because everyone has a difference in opinion. You need to be politically savvy so you can move the project forward and meet your deadline.

*You Need to Be Genuine, Authentic and Ethical When Dealing with Politics

When you create a new project team, your team wont always trust you and where you want to go with the project. You need to be forthright and honest with them right from the get-go; otherwise, itll be difficult down the road for you if your team and other stakeholders in the project dont trust you or your ideaseven if you believe they are worthy ideas thatll benefit the company.

*Find and Observe Major Players in the Social Organization

To create a good project team, you need to figure out who the major players are when it comes to the social environment of the workplace. This is also called shadow organization. Before choosing people to work on your project, you want people who have influence over others so you can get better buy-in if a project is difficult to sell to others. Figure out who is respected and followed by others because this person (or people) could definitely help your project take off the ground and be successful.

*Create and Build Relationships

It is important for you as a project manager to create and build on relationships when you are working as a team on a project. Your training as a PMP has likely prepared you for this. A healthy relationship means youll be able to work better with everyone on the team and youll have improved communication so youll have better access to important information about the project. Use your social work network to your benefit because your project depends on it.

*Be Persuasive But Not Overpowering

Some project managers tend to get a big head when they have strong ideas for a project. This could be because they are passionate about the project and they have strong opinions on how the project should look like and turn out. To keep yourself in check without going overboard on pushing ideas on to your team members, try to be persuasive instead of overpowering. You need to convince your team your ideas are good, which is why developing communication skills is vital to the success of your project.
