4 Ways To Make Fresh Crab Legs

Fresh crab legs are one of seafood lover's favorite foods and there are literally thousands of varieties to choose from. However, there are a few common types that are eaten most often such as Maryland blue crab. Along with a few other types of foods and with the legs of the crab, you can create a savory seafood spread for everyone to enjoy.

There are four basic ways of cooking fresh or frozen legs, baking, boiling, microwaving, and steaming and with each way having their own advantages but still offering delicious results.

Baking Them

In a 350 degree Fahrenheit oven, bake the legs for 7 to 9 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before removing from the shell and serve immediately. Baking crab is a quick way to enjoy the seafood but some feel that much of the distinctive flavor is lost when cooking with this method.

Boiling Them

Boiling crab legs takes about 10 minutes, but be careful as if they cook too long with this particular method the meat will take on a rubbery texture. When boiling a whole crab, boil for 20 minutes or until the entire shell has turned red.

Carefully remove the crab legs from the boiling water with tongs and lay them on dry paper towels to cool. You will yield the most meat from crab legs when choosing boiling as the cooking method, however, some feel that the meat is not as sweet when boiling as it is with steaming.

Microwaving Them

Crab legs should be wrapped inside of several damp paper towels then microwave on the high setting for 5 minutes. Allow to cool slightly before removing the crab legs from their shells and serving immediately. Microwaving is the quickest way to prepare crab legs but offers the least flavorful results.

Steaming Them

Fill a tall or large pot 1/4 of the way full with water. Add the crab legs, cover the pot, and cook while the water boils for 8 minutes. Steaming a whole crab will take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes. If you are using a crab steamer, fill the water up to just over the section with the holes, which will cause some of the water to evaporate and create steam.

One good thing about steaming crab legs is that it is nearly impossible to overcook the meat, unlike baking, boiling, or microwaving. You can even leave the legs in the steamer while preparing the rest of your meal. A lot of meat tends to remain in the shell when using this method of cooking crab legs.

After using any of these four cooking methods, serve your crab with melted butter and freshly squeezed lemon juice. You can also use seasonings although many people prefer the taste of the meat by itself along with a few sprinkles of lemon juice or butter.

Whether it is the holidays, a party with friends and family, or any time of year when you want a delicious and healthy meal that is easy to make, crab legs are the ideal choice. In addition, with the leftover crab meat you can always make tasty crab cakes for tomorrow's lunch or dinner.
