You might have heard about the fuss over Mafia Wars

, the phenomenal game with millions of players on Facebook, MySpace and Yahoo. Since the game is free anyway, why not give it a try? However, there are a few important things that you need to know before starting a game. Lack of knowledge of these might make your beginning experience a little tougher or might spoil the game as a whole for you.

1. Choose your character profile properly. When you start the game, you'll be asked if you want to be a Mogul, Maniac, Fearless type of character. Choose this carefully, because as of now, there's no way you can change this after it's been selected!

2. Always remember to buy whatever you want before depositing your cash into the bank. This is especially crucial when you start out because cash is scarce and the 10% admin fee charged by the bank may prove costly for lower level players.

3. Always deposit your cash into the bank before starting a fight with other Mafia. This is commonly overlooked by newbies and they sometimes end up losing their hard earned cash after losing a fight.

4. Buy properties in multiples of 10. Because property prices increase after each purchase, you'll ultimately end up paying more if you buy them one at a time. Since the maximum lot size of each purchase is 10, buy them all at one go.

5. Do not fear fighting. Since you can't really die in Mafia Wars, go ahead and take part in fights. You'll never know if you might end up winning and earning a few XP. There's really nothing to lose, unless you forgot to deposit your cash into the bank beforehand.
