, and topping the popularity polls at the moment are netbooks. These neat little machines are now as capable as the more familiar laptop, but a lot smaller and lighter, and some of the latest models even feature DVD rewriters.

But how do you choose the best buys? Here are my top 5 models:

Acer Aspire One D250 is one of the top-selling net books at this present time. The screen is clear and bright, making it great for viewing (and editing) photos, and the excellent Internet connection means that it is easy to upload them to Flickr or anywhere else for that matter.

Asus Eee PC 1005P is another very popular model. The overall build is solid, the screen is very clear and the keyboard fine for everyday use. The battery lasts all day, and because it is so small it just slips into a pocket or handbag. The charger is also small, making this an excellent choice for travelling.

Toshiba NB 250 is a brand-new netbook from one of the world's largest manufacturers and features a fully functional DVD rewriter. This exceptional machine has a bright display and an almost full size keyboard and trackpad making it a genuine alternative to a laptop.

Whichever machine you choose you should make sure that it suits your needs before buying. If possible visit a store and get some hands on experience, because although they are small, light, easily portable and very powerful, net books can be fiddly to use particularly for anybody with big fingers!

Two accessories I would consider essential when buying any Netbook are a case and a cordless mouse - both are very cheap and easily available, but they make a huge difference.
