5 Holiday Activities for Port Macquarie Vacations

Many Sydney-siders haven't yet been initiated into the pleasures of Port Macquarie. It is only four hours from Sydney (just one change of driver!), or less than an hour on one of the flights that run daily. Despite being so close, it is a world away in atmosphere and ambience. Port Macquarie is home to around 40,000 people - small enough to have a very friendly feel, but large enough to have convenient facilities. And it is still quite similar to the state that European explorer John Oxley found it in, when he said that "The port abounds with fish ... the forest hills and rising grounds abounded with large kangaroos and the marshes afford shelter and support to innumerable wild fowl". Port Macquarie has a gorgeous climate, a natural feel and plenty of things to do, only stone's throw from Sydney. We look at activities for first-timers to NSW's best hidden gem.
1. Heritage exploration
It wasn't too long after Sydney was settled that explorers made it to Port Macquarie, which (like Australia at large), was originally a penal settlement. Have a look around Douglas Vale Homestead, the oldest timber house in the Hastings region, and the Port Macquarie Historical Museum, which has displays from times long past, and also artefacts from history in the making the present! You'll find a few historical hotels in Port Macquarie, and also some modern luxurious hotels in historical districts.
2. Day spas
As a popular tourist destination, there is no shortage of day spas in Port Macquarie. There are blokey-type spas, like Simon the Muscle Mechanic, along with pampering from some of the best known names in the beauty business for women, at Ella Bache. However, the most convenient and often the most indulgent options can be found within your Port Macquarie hotel. Blush is one such day spa, and has delicious sounding treatments ranging from fresh and natural, to creamy, to delicately tender!
3. Surfing
This is one of the town's main attractions - positioned so that beaches are very exposed to the ocean's moods, beaches in Port Macquarie have great, consistent surf. There is a surf-cam available online, so if you've chosen Port Macquarie accommodation with either wifi or wired internet access, you can check out how the surf looks before making the decision to wax up and head out. Rips, rocks and sharks are a factor (remember the famous Port Macquarie wildlife!), but no more so than at any other Australian beach.
4. Watersports
The ocean is a big part of life in Port Macquarie - more than 180 degrees of the view from many points is taken up by the ocean! Even if you arent a confident or keen surfer, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the water. You can grab a charter deep sea fishing boat and bag yourself some fresh fish dinners for back home (your Port Macquarie hotel will have plenty for the time youre there). Many charter boats provide rods and equipment, so no need to bring your own. Kayaking on the Hastings River, with the local dolphins that are quite interested in boats, is a treat. You can also hire a boat and get some air at Stoney Park waterksi and wakeboard area, about 15 minutes north of town.
5. Relax and be taken care of!
Port Macquarie's hotels have that gorgeous sense of country hospitality, with city quality standards. Look out for extras like maid service for the rooms, heated pools, live music, seasonal menus at the hotel restaurants and laundry and valet service for the most relaxing Port experience.About the Author:
