5 Important Qualities Of A Christian Camp Counselor

Up until graduation, summer camp is a great time for kids to have fun during the summer

. When some people become to old for camp, then still want to find a way to relive their past experiences. College students might decide that they want to return to camp as Christian camp counselors instead of as campers. Not all of the college students that want to become camp counselors are qualified though. At Deer Creek, we are looking for certain qualities. Keep reading and see if you have what it takes to do this very important job.

1. Discerning. Camp can be a fun experience for most kids. Some children might feel left out or scared though. It is up to the counselors to discover if any children have hidden feelings of not fitting in, and to help them feel welcome. No matter how well a camper is masking the way that he or she feels, a good counselor should be able to help the camper through any adjustment periods.

2. Empathy. Our counselors must be compassionate and caring. Even our older campers may get homesick, and we need our Christian camp counselors to be good listeners and build good relationships. Campers should be able to look up to and trust the counselors. Even if a camper is being irrational, then the counselor should still still show support. All situations should be handled with kindness and integrity.

3. Fun. Camp should be fun, and so should the counselors. Although empathy and discernment is very important, so is having a good time. Camp is about the great outdoors and making new friends. It is about understanding God in new ways. Counselors should really want to be at camp. The more fun that they have, the more fun the campers will have. This is a time for making memories. A fun personality is a must for good counselors.

4. Experience. Many children that are at camp for the first time will look to the counselors for guidance. Our counselors need to know everything about the camping experience. Most of our counselors have been past campers, but some counselors can be trained through orientation and exploring the grounds on their own.

5. Respectable. There are so many different camps out there that we feel thankful that parents choose our christian camp. They do this to help their children grow in faith. Seeing other campers their age really believe in Jesus and live a christian lifestyle can help them with their faith. Many children come to camp thinking that being a christian is just for Sundays. They might change their minds by meeting cool christian counselors. We are looking for respectable Christian men and women to share the love of God.
