5 Things To Look For When Buying A Second Hand Car

Buying a new car is always a great experience

, whether you're heading to your local Chrysler dealers for an affordable, family car or to a Bentley dealership for something a little higher in both quality and price.

Whilst buying a second hand car is still a great experience, the whole process of purchasing the car is slightly different and whilst second hand Bentley's, for example, will rarely have any major problems, heading to second hand Chrysler dealers - or any similar manufacturer that mass produces affordable cars - and it's important that you look out for these 5 things to ensure you get the best car possible.

1. Rust - one of the most common problems on second hand cars is rust. Appearing in a variety of different places, it's important that you check the most obvious places first and foremost, which are the sills of the windows, around the petrol cap (a lot of people cover this rust up without treating it, so make sure you look closely) and on joints where any major pieces of the bodywork join together (such as between the wheel arch side panel and door).

2. Poor interior - when you buy a brand new car, there's always a fantastic smell - one that is fresh and clean - that used to only be smelt in new cars.

The problem is, you can now purchase a spray which makes your car smell brand new, giving the impression that everything is OK inside.

Don't be fooled, however - make sure you check the seat material and carpets in both the back and front to ensure that there are no major cuts, rips or stains.

3. Spare wheel - it might be something that you take for granted, but if you're buying a second hand car (particularly one not from a reputable garage), it isn't unheard of for there not to be a spare tyre.

Keep in mind, though, that if the car you're buying is only a year or two old, it might not have had a spare wheel to begin with, as more and more new cars are being sold with run flat tyres or tyres that are filed with gel to prevent punctures from being a serious issue.

4. Unusual sounds - unless you're a mechanic or a major car enthusiast, it's unlikely you'll know what you're looking for when taking a look under the bonnet.

However, it is likely that you'll be able to notice any unusual sounds coming from the engine, or in fact any other part of the car.

Switch the engine on and listen for any unusual noises. Then, with the engine still running, get out and have a walk around the car, paying attention to the exhaust and engine.

A sound that you don't recognise or that sounds unhealthy may be something that is normal for the car, but it's always worth questioning.

5. Working air conditioning - one of the most common faults with modern cars is that their air conditioning units fail, either by not working at all or by blowing out hot air.

Generally speaking, they are not difficult faults to fix, but it's worthwhile testing the air conditioning out to ensure that if there is a problem, you are aware of it and can make a reduction in your offer.
