5 Things You Need to Know About Ferret Care
5 Things You Need to Know About Ferret Care
1) The Ferrets Home.
This is one of the most important areas that most new and old ferret owners get wrong. You must give your ferret a good place to call home. A cage around 18 inches wide, by 18 inches deep and 30 inches wide should do the trick. Placing ramps and hammocks around the cage so they can climb around on is good for them to get some exercise while your not around to let them out. Ferrets are den animals and you want to create this as much as possible in the cage they will call home. On the bottom of the cage be sure to put down some linoleum tiles and a washable carpet, this is easier to clean and will not keep in the odor like pine or cedar chips. This one thing can really help with the care of your ferret.
2) Entertainment.
While ferrets are known to sleep up to 20 hours a day, when awake they love to play. To keep them entertained get some toys for them to play with. They love to crawl through just about anything, cardboard boxes, pvc pipes, even paper bags. The more you keep your ferret entertained the less trouble they will look to get into.
3) Potty Training.
This is key when trying learning ferret care. If done right you will not have to clean up as much around the cage. Place a small box or tray around 3 inches high inside the cage. Be sure to secure it with some clips or your furry friend might make a toy out of it. Keep it away from the sleeping and eating areas. You want to use pelleted litter as the clumping litter may irritate the ferrets eyes and they will be less likely to use it.
4) Proper Diet.
Make sure you feed your ferret a diet of least 34% animal meat and 22% fat. Ferrets are carnivores and to stay healthy they need to have meat in their diets. Don't just run out and get can dog, or cat food for them as it may cause some health problems. Foods that are good for your ferret to snack on are turkey or chicken. Things to stay away from are vegetables, and fruits. Along with eggs and raw onions.
5) Proper Holding
Ferrets have a very fragile skeletons so when ever you handle your ferret be sure to use two hands when picking them up, use one to support their chest and the other to hold their hips. Ferrets have a great se
