5 Tips For Great Backyard Camping Fun

When the kids start getting bored during the summer break or on any given weekend

, nothing could be more exciting than a night under canvas. While it may not be possible to go on a proper camping expedition with them, you can have a lot of fun by organising a backyard campout. You have a great opportunity to teach them a little about camping without having to take time off from your job. The kids will love the idea of spending the night out in the tent and they are never more than a few yards away from a proper kitchen and bathroom facilities if needed. They can also invite some of their friends over for a camping sleepover!

1. Let the kids help put up the tent.

The kids can help choose a site for the tent in the yard and you can show them how to put the tent up. They are already learning a vital skill for when they go camping for real. Even younger children can help by retrieving tent parts or putting their sleeping gear in the tent.

2. Plan some games.

While it is still light, you could organise some fun campsite games. Treasure hunts are always popular and you can get their brains working a little with cryptic clues to where the treasures are located.

3. Cook up some camping food.

After using up all of that energy, most little campers will start to get hungry. Try to make picnic food that can be eaten outside which has a camping theme. Think hotdogs, burgers, beans (of course), and dont forget the toasted marshmallows. Also, make sure they have lots of juice and water to wash it down. If you have the space for a camp fire, thats the best, but if you dont have that space, Coleman grills do just fine.

4. Plan some sitting games.

As it starts to get dark, light the safe LED camp lantern in the tent and its time for some campsite games. If you dont know any simple, fun word games to play, there are loads detailed on the internet. Do a search earlier in the day and prepare some for later. Try to pick games which require thought rather than action. If you have logs to sit on, that can be fun, especially around a camp fire. Otherwise you can sit in camping chairs or right there on the ground. If it gets chilly sitting outside, you may be playing these games in the confined area of the tent.

5. Sing Songs and Tell Ghost Stories.

A back garden campout would not be complete without a good, old-fashioned sing-song. It doesnt matter if you cant strum a guitar, there are loads of songs that the kids can pick up quickly and join in with. If you need inspiration for songs, do a quick search on You Tube and you will find songs with the lyrics as well. You could even take an MP3 player with some portable speakers into the tent and sing along to that.

When everybody is hoarse from singing, it is time for a short camping related bedtime story. Make sure its not a scary one or everyone will make for the house! Then, when you have made sure that they all have a flashlight handy, its time for lights out.
