5 Tips On Shipping Your Car

Shipping a car can be a complex process if you're not experienced with the best methods

. Here are some tips to help you streamline the process.

1-Take the time to get several car shipping estimates from reliable auto shipping companies. Rather than going with the first company you talk to, you will be more likely to get a good rate by shopping around. When you call companies to discuss rates, you need to know the following: the date of departure, your preferred shipping method (do you want to drive the auto to a loading zone yourself, or do you want it shipped door to door, etc,), the make and model of car, the zip code of where your car will be picked up, and the zip code of your car's final destination.

2-Wash your auto before shipping, so you can carefully inspect it for dents and scratches. You should make a note for yourself of any scratches or dents, so that you will know if any damage is done to your car.

3-Make sure your auto is in drivable condition. Depending on your shipping company, sometime cars are driven onto the transport vehicle, and sometime they will be driving your car from your house to the shipping terminal for you, and from the destination terminal to your new home. This is called "operable" shipping (since the car shipping company will be operating your vehicle). Inoperable shipping is less common, but it means that the shipping company will not be driving or operating your car at all during shipping, even onto the transport vehicle.

4-Decide whether you want your auto shipped in an open shipping vehicle or in an enclosed vehicle. Generally, most cars and trucks are shipped in open vehicles, such as the car transport trucks you often see on highways. However, this method doesn't protect the auto from weather (rain, snow, hail, etc.), and can provide less protection against vandalism. Although much more expensive than open shipping, enclosed shipping is a good idea if you are shipping an expensive, top of the line auto.

5-Be realistic about how quickly your auto can be shipped. You won't get a car shipped from New York to Seattle in two days, and you'll save a lot of stress if you know the general timetables most car shipping companies work with. If you are shipping your car from the east coast to the west coast (or vice versa), you should plan on 6 to 14 days. Shipping an auto from the north to the south (and vice versa) takes between 3 to 8 days. If you're shipping from the Midwest to the east coast or the west coast, you should plan on 3 to 8 days.
